Alumnus Kevin Galloway earns tenure at the U.S. Naval Academy

ISR/ECE alumnus Kevin Galloway (EE Ph.D. 2011) has been promoted to associate professor with tenure at the United States Naval Academy, where he is a faculty member in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. At Maryland, Galloway was advised by Professor P. S. Krishnaprasad (ECE/ISR) and co-advised by alumnus Eric Justh (EE Ph.D. 1998), an electronics engineer at the Naval Research Laboratory. During his time at Maryland, Justh also was advised by Dr. Krishnaprasad.

Galloway’s research interests are focused on the control of coordinated motions for nonlinear systems, such as collective control of groups/swarms of autonomous agents, and biped locomotion.

Galloway is a 1997 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy. Before beginning his graduate studies, he served as a Strike Officer on the USS STETHEM and an Assistant Operations Officer, Amphibious Squadron Seven aboard the USS BOXER. He returned to the Academy as an instructor from 2002–2004, before beginning his graduate studies.

After he completed his Ph.D. at Maryland, Galloway was a postdoctoral researcher with Professor Jessy Grizzle at the University of Michigan from 2011-2013. (Professor Grizzle was an advisee of ECE/ISR Professor Steve Marcus when he was on faculty at the University of Texas at Austin.)

Galloway recently collaborated with another ISR/ECE alumnus on a paper published in Proceedings of the Royal Society A. With Biswadip Dey (EE Ph.D. 2015), another advisee of Dr. Krishnaprasad, he co-wrote the paper, "Beacon-referenced pursuit for collective motion in three dimensions," published on Feb. 12, 2020. The authors introduce a decentralized control mechanism to guide steering control of autonomous agents maneuvering among multiple moving and stationary entities in a three-dimensional environment.
