Mechanical Engineering Seminar Series

Additive Manufacturing/3DPrinting - Processes, Applications, and Research Opportunities

Speaker: Howard A. Kuhn, Ph.D.
Professor of ME and MSE
University of Pittsburgh

Rapid prototyping, or solid freeform fabrication have become commercial enterprises to provide a wide range of material and size options. The original concept of 3D-Printing of form and fit models has evolved into production of real parts capable of mechanical, thermal, and electromagnetic load transmission. Expansion of the industry toward manufacturing disruption will occur through continued technological innovation in materials, sensor/control integration, and design methodologies as well as changes in education, supply chains, and legal structures. This presentation will review the fundamental mechanisms of the seven classes of additive manufacturing technologies, and suggest related research opportunities.

Dr.Kuhn is Co-Director of the Swanson Center for Production Innovation teaching courses in manufacturing, product realization, and entrepreneurship. He conducts re - search on manufacturing biomedical devices for tissue engineering. Also, he is Techni - cal Advisor for the National Additive Manufacturing Innovation Institute, and Research Consultant at the Ex One Company, developing a 3D printer for metals and ceramics. Among his many recognitions is the Gold Medal of ASM Intl. and the Eli Whitney Award of the Society of Manufacturing Engineers.
