The Increasing Applications of Unmanned Aircraft Systems

Ethan Aus
Undergraduate Student, UAS Test Site, Aerospace Engineering
Advisor: Matthew Scassero

Abstract
In the last decade alone, the various uses of Unmanned Aircraft Systems have grown increasingly thanks to advances in battery technology and affordability. Not only are they popular amongst hobbyists, but they have become a crucial part in many important industries. To name a few, agriculture, transportation, construction, conservation, and recently delivery services are all important aspects of society that UAS have been used to improve. Here at the UAS Test Site, we have found several other key ways in which drones can improve society. The UAS Test Site has utilized drones to aid the Environmental Protection Agency and NASA Research Labs. In conjunction with UMD’s Medical Center and the city of Baltimore, the UAS Test Site was also the first to successfully transport an organ for transplant via UAS. By analyzing the ways in which UAS were utilized in these applications, we hope to discover new opportunities for UAS to be used.

About the Robotics Student Seminars
The Robotics Student Seminars at the University of Maryland College Park are a student-run series of talks given by current robotics students.

The purpose of these talks is to:

  • Encourage interaction between Robotics students from different subfields;
  • Provide an opportunity for Robotics students to be aware of and possibly get involved in the research their peers are conducting;
  • Provide an opportunity for Robotics students to receive feedback on their current research;
  • Provide speaking opportunities for Robotics students.
